hell no its not the best rock album of the last 20 years. sure it had its time and place but why on earth is it so celebrated. shit, shout at the devil holds its own as well, and regardless at the time motley were a way more fucked up band and quite a bit more dangerous, just ask razzle's family from hanoi. "sweet child" , great power ballad no doubt but i'd take skid row's "I remember you" anyday. best tracks on the album "my michelle" and "you're crazy" are above the cusp killers but "paradise city" is as worn out as "we will rock you". obviously metallica's black album is much stronger, def leppard's hysteria is up there too, and though it swerves into metal, alice in chains dirt is near perfect. appetite may have been a top 20 album as far as best rock albums to this point from 1987, but there are too many solid records to call it heads above. hell the cult's sonic temple is pretty nifty.

Shout At The Devil is almost 25 years old (YIKES!). Appetite For Destruction is indeed the best rock album released in the past 20 years. of course your mileage may vary but I think most rock music lovers will agree. "Most rock music lovers will agree"? Surely you jest, and perhaps you need to revisit some basic logical fallacies (scroll down to "Argumentum ad numerum").
And who are these "most rock music lovers," anyway? Not I, who would not even list Appetite for Destruction in my top 10 rock albums of the past 20 years. And I'd be hard-pressed to find others who rank it at a lofty number one. That album's success did manage to get poodlehead metal bands to stop washing their hair and get tattoos, but musically, it really doesn't hold up, except in some ironic buttrock sense.
Feh.

None of those records even comes close to being as strong in the writing department, nor as authentic in the overall feel, tone, production and execution.
Without a doubt, best record in 20 years... not just on the rock end, either.
