I was 19 and managing a chain of five restaurants. A close friend from high school asked me to manage his band. Three years and elephant-like effort later, I got them an offer from Virgin. The band responded by breaking up.
I caught the bug, though, and my next act sold millions, won grammys - the whole bit.
For me, it's always about justice, and feeling like a potential client's obscurity is a criminal shame. You have to take it personal, from day one, or the relationship is destined to fail.
Most relationships built on money eventually discover there isn't enough.

i had a similar experience. i met some people at a large management company. i found an act i believed in and pitched them. the owners didn't get it, but one of the staff managers did. we started our own company and they went diamond, won multiple grammy's etc.
since that point, its been about leveraging that artist to sign new clients to keep the train rolling.

Very inspiring stories. I agree that it takes that one act that you believe in to light that spark. But it does get hard at times. seems like you're working against the machine. I always say it's about getting to that one right person who will listen. Ropers, what is your advice for getting to the right person? Many Thanks.

I am with Anne but then some. I worked every aspect of the industry. I saw how some managers treated bands. Labels treated managers and bands. Bands treated managers. You get the idea. I learned a lot of what not to do. I then fell in love with a band. Rest is history.

Every day, a new opportunity to decide where your next step will go is given to you. Your future will be determined by the accumulation of these daily decisions. You control your steps and therefore your destiny, so choose wisely.
