NEW YORK, NY, May 30, 2017 – Producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David, and Eva Price have announced that the highly anticipated musical debut of Alanis Morissette’s JAGGED LITTLE PILL will premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge Massachusetts in May 2018. Boasting an incredible lineup of seasoned talent, the world premiere will be directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Pippin, Waitress, Finding Neverland, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess), with a book written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno, United States of Tara).  Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (American Idiot, Next to Normal) will be providing orchestrations and arrangements. A.R.T.’s production of Jagged Little Pill is produced by special arrangement with Vivek J. Tiwary (American Idiot, A Raisin in The Sun, and The Addams Family) Arvind Ethan David (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, The Infidel), and Eva Price (Dear Evan Hansen, On Your Feet, Peter and the Starcatcher).

“This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true,” said Morissette in a statement. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”

Songs from Morissette’s groundbreaking third album ‘Jagged Little Pill,’ which she co-wrote with Glen Ballard, will be performed in the upcoming show including classics “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” and “Hand in My Pocket.” Melodies from her extensive body of work will also be incorporated into the musical. In 1995, JAGGED LITTLE PILL launched the singer-songwriter into International stardom, earning her five Grammy Awards out of nine nominations, including Album of the Year. She became the youngest artist in history to receive the title, and remained so for the next fourteen years. To date, the album remains among the best-selling albums of all time, selling more than 33 million copies worldwide.

From the Tony Award-winning productions of Pippin, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Waitress, and HAIR to her immersive Studio 54 inspired The Donkey Show, Diane Paulus has been expanding the boundaries of theater by working with artists across disciplines including 7 Doigts and Sara Bareilles. “Jagged Little Pill defined a generation and yet the raw, emotional honesty of Alanis’s songs feels more needed now than ever,” said Diane Paulus. “I am thrilled to be collaborating with Alanis and Diablo to unlock the theatrical power of this album.”

In close creative consultation with Morissette, Diablo Cody has written a new and original storyline that revolves around a modern and multi-generational family and their complex dynamics, touching on issues of gender identity and race.”I am so excited to tell a modern story through these iconic songs. Alanis’s music is full of powerful narratives that lend themselves organically to this process” says Cody, who won an Academy Award for writing the screenplay for the beloved indie film Juno, and penned the screenplays for Young Adult and Ricki and the Flash.  Bringing her talent for storytelling to the small screen, she is the creator of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning series “United States of Tara” alongside Steven Spielberg, and the WGA-nominated series “One Mississippi” with Tig Notaro.

“Alanis, Diablo, Diane and Tom are a producer’s dream team,” said Tiwary, David, and Price in a joint statement. “We’re honored to be shepherding these four fierce pioneers towards the creation of a what will be a true cultural event, one worthy of the groundbreaking legacy of ‘Jagged Little Pill.'”

ICv2 Review: ‘The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story’ 4.5/5 Stars

By Nick Smith | ICv2 | December 7, 2016

This is an expanded new edition of the 2013 graphic biography of Brian Epstein, the man who turned The Beatles from a local bar band into an international phenomenon. The book’s size and price point make it an excellent bargain, and a great holiday present for Beatles fans.

Tiwary’s version of the Epstein story is moving and interesting, as you see him creating a phenomenon at tremendous personal cost. He’s not flawless, and you can also see his driven perfectionism creating obstacles. From a record-store executive to manager of the most popular act in the world is a big step, and not a safe or easy one… Read full review

At first glance, there are few commonalities between Brian Epstein, the manager and unofficial fifth member of The Beatles, and Vivek Tiwary, a theater producer and CEO of Tiwary Entertainment Group Ltd.

Epstein grew up in 1940s and ’50s Liverpool, England, far from 1980s New York City where Tiwary spent his high school years hunting down rock shows and going to fine arts events with his parents. Tiwary is proud of his Indian heritage and through his work celebrates people who have been underdogs because of their identities—while Epstein spent his life hiding who he truly was from a judgmental world. And Epstein’s career was cut short by a drug overdose at 32, while Tiwary, age 43, has a successful career as a theater producer, with 25 Tony Awards credited to his productions…Read full article

Publishers Weekly: Vivek Tiwary: Telling Stories Any Way You Like

By Brigid Alverson | PUBLISHERS WEEKLY | Oct 12, 2016

Storytelling comes first for Vivek Tiwary; the medium comes second. And as a result, he tells stories in different ways in a lot of different media.

Tiwary is a pop culture polymath. He’s worked in the music industry with stars like Bruce Springsteen; he’s the founder of a multi-platform art and music company, and he’s produced multiple Tony award-winning musicals (among them Green Day’s American Idiot) and is currently working on a Broadway production of Alanis Morissette’s album Jagged Little Pill. Baltimore Comic-Con: How an Indian American outsider grew to achieve his dreams through art

And that sense of finding acceptance through the arts spoke to Vivek Tiwary, who devoted long years to turning Epstein’s inspiring story into a visual biography… Read full article

Author Vivek J. Tiwary to adapt his best-selling graphic novel for television

NEW YORK (March 7, 2016) – Sonar Entertainment has optioned the rights to New York Times #1 Best-Selling graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story, written by Vivek J. Tiwary with art by Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker, it was announced today by Tom Patricia, EVP, Event Series, Sonar Entertainment. The critically acclaimed novel will be developed as a multi-part event series with Tiwary adapting his work for television and serving as executive producer. The project comes complete with Tiwary’s unprecedented access to the Lennon/McCartney song catalog – the first ever Beatles-related biopic to secure such rights.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Vivek to expand his vision to another medium and expose a whole new audience to his riveting and audacious work,” said Patricia. “This story of the man behind the rise of The Beatles will captivate fans around the world and make for a compelling series that is both intimate and epic.”

Tiwary added, “Brian Epstein’s story is rich in inspiration and is set amidst a backdrop of great cultural change and the legendary history of The Beatles, so an event series truly feels like the only way to do Brian justice. We’re going to do wonderful things with the extra creative room afforded to us and I’m thrilled to be working with Sonar to take advantage of all the exciting elements this format has to offer.”

The Fifth Beatle recounts the untold true story of legendary Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, and his effort to drive the unknown band from playing in a cellar in Liverpool to international super-stardom. Epstein overcame great obstacles, both personally and professionally, being a gay man in a time and place where homosexual acts were deemed a felony. As Paul McCartney himself once said, “If anyone was ‘The Fifth Beatle’ it was Brian.” The graphic novel, published by Dark Horse Comics in 2013, went on to win numerous literary awards including the Eisner Award, considered the ‘Academy Awards of the comics industry’, for Best Reality-Based work, and two Harvey Awards including Best Original Graphic Album, as well as several other accolades. In 2014 The Fifth Beatle was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives, in conjunction with Brian Epstein’s official induction.

New York Times- The Fifth Man: Brian Epstein and the Beatles

By Michael Beschloss | NY TIMES |

In a ceremony last year at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Beatles’ original manager, Brian Epstein, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The honor was well deserved. Epstein’s early oversight of what many consider to be the most popular musical act of the 20th century led some to call him the fifth Beatle. Some of the strategies he used to propel the Beatles to prominence (while also probably costing them a fortune in lost potential revenue) would be ill suited to today’s world of digital streaming, music piracy and YouTube, which makes Epstein a case study in how much music management has changed since the early 1960s.

Vivek J. Tiwary’s The Fifth Beatle Graphic Novel Wins Will Eisner Comic Industry Award For “Best Graphic Novel – Reality Based”

NEW YORK (July 29, 2014) – In something of an upset, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story, the acclaimed New York Times #1 Best-Selling graphic novel by writer/producer Vivek J. Tiwary and artists Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker, published by Dark Horse Comics, won the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for “Best Reality-Based Work” at the 26th annual Eisner Awards, which took place last Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego. The Eisner Awards are prizes given for creative achievement in American comic books, sometimes referred to as the comic industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards, and ballots are open only to professionals in the comic book industry. The Fifth Beatle winning this “Eisner” could be considered an upset — not only was it up against stiff competition, including MARCH (Top Shelf Comix), a graphic novel memoir by US Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis, and the acclaimed and super-popular Hip Hop Family Tree (Fantagraphics) by Ed Piskor, but this marks the first time a first-time comics writer has won this award.

The Fifth Beatle film adaptation, written and produced by Tiwary, is the first ever feature film about The Beatles to secure music rights to their songs, having been granted unprecedented access to the Lennon/McCartney music catalog. It is about Brian Epstein, The Beatles’ manager and essentially the man behind their great success. Paul McCartney said, “If anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian.” A film version of the graphic novel will be produced by Tiwary with unprecedented access to Beatles’ music. It is scheduled to begin shooting in 2015 and more info can be found at www.FifthBeatle.com.

“As a first-time comics writer, lifelong comics lover, and all-around fanboy, it’s a dream come true to receive this recognition from the comics industry and the happy and humbling honor of winning an Eisner! I can’t wait show the world my screenplay for ‘The Fifth Beatle’ and the forthcoming film next!” Tiwary says.

The Fifth Beatle Wins IndieFab Award At Foreword Reviews’ Book Of The Year Awards!

July 1, NEW YORK, NY— Vivek J. Tiwary’s debut graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story, with art by Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker, is the 2013 IndieFab Award Winner for the Foreword Reviews’ 16th Annual Book Of The Year Awards in the Graphic Novels & Comics category. Foreword Reviews, the only review magazine solely dedicated to discovering new indie books, announced the winner on Friday, June 27th at the 2014 American Library Association Annual Conference. Each year, Foreword Reviews highlights a small group of indie authors and publishers whose innovative work stands out among the crowd.

“I learned to love literature by hanging out in independent bookstores in New York’s East Village, and by spending hours in my local school and neighborhood libraries. So it’s a particular honor for ‘The Fifth Beatle’ to receive Foreword Review’s IndieFab Gold Medal for Graphic Novels and Comics. And I’m thrilled that this recognition will help to further spread Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein’s inspiring story around the world,” Tiwary says.

Vivek J. Tiwary, who is a multiple Tony Award–winning producer (Green Day’s American Idiot, The Addams Family, A Raisin In The Sun) wrote the novel, which was painted by fanboy favorites Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty Star, King Conan, Starman, Superman) and Kyle Baker (The Shadow, Plastic Man, Why I Hate Saturn) The Fifth Beatle is the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles to unprecedented international stardom. The Fifth Beatle is an inspirational story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Epstein was homosexual when it was illegal to be so in the UK, Jewish during a period of pervasive anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was considered just a dingy port town. He helped spread the Beatles’ message of love to the entire world, yet died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two, consumed by staggering ambition and the endless struggles that came with it. The Fifth Beatle is available in bookstores everywhere and on Amazon.com.

The Fifth Beatle film adaptation, written and produced by Tiwary, is the first ever feature film about The Beatles to secure music rights to their songs, having been granted unprecedented access to the Lennon/McCartney music catalog. It is scheduled to begin shooting in early 2015 and more info can be found at www.FifthBeatle.com.

The Fifth Beatle Nominated For First Annual Lambda Literary Award For Best Graphic Novel

March 7, NEW YORK, NY— Vivek J. Tiwary’s debut graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle has been named a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for “Best LGBT Graphic Novel.” This is the first year for the graphic novel category, which celebrates achievement in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender writing for graphic novels published in 2013. The Fifth Beatle, published by Dark Horse, has already garnered recognition as a New York Times #1 Best-Seller for three weeks upon release in November.

Started in 1989, The Lambda Literary Awards, or the “Lammys”, were created to celebrate and preserve LGBT literature through programs that honor excellence, promote visibility and encourage up-and-coming writers. In its 26th year, there were 746 submissions across 24 categories. Winners will be announced during a ceremony on June 2nd in New York City, in conjunction with Book Expo America.

“What an honor to be nominated for a Lammy!” Tiwary said. “‘The Fifth Beatle’ Brian Epstein was homosexual at time when it was deemed a felony, and yet he dreamed of spreading the Beatles’ message of love across the globe– while tragically needing to hide his own love away. His story has deeply inspired me in both my personal and professional life, so I’m full of joy that this recognition by the Lambda Literary Foundation will further spread Brian Epstein’s inspiring life story to others.”

Fellow nominees in the Lammy’s “Best LGBT Graphic Novel” category are: Artifice, written by Alex Woolfson and illustrated by Winona Nelson; Calling Dr. Laura: A Graphic Memoir, by Nicole J. Georges; and Duck! Second Chances, by Tana Ford.

Vivek J. Tiwary, who is a multiple Tony Award–winning producer (Green Day’s American Idiot, The Addams Family, Mel Brooks’ The Producers) wrote the novel, which was painted by fanboy favorites Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty Star, King Conan, Starman, Superman) and Kyle Baker (The Shadow, Plastic Man.) The Fifth Beatle is the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles to unprecedented international stardom. More than merely the story of “The Man Who Made The Beatles,” The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Epstein was homosexual when it was illegal to be so in the United Kingdom, Jewish during a period of pervasive anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was considered just a dingy port town. He helped spread the Beatles’ message of love to the entire world, yet died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two, consumed by staggering ambition and the endless struggles that came with it. The Fifth Beatle Ranks #1 On New York Times Best Sellers List!

December 13, NEW YORK, NY— Vivek J. Tiwary’s debut graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle tops The New York Times bestseller list in its third week of release! The breakout novel sits atop long-established titles such as The Walking Dead and Batman. This news comes on the heels of announcing Peyton Reed (BRING IT ON, THE BREAK-UP) as the director of the film adaptation and the beginning of the casting process for the part of Brian Epstein.  See list here

Written by multiple Tony Award–winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American Idiot, The Addams Family, Mel Brooks’ The Producers) and painted by fanboy favorites Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty Star, King Conan, Starman, Superman) and Kyle Baker (The Shadow, Plastic Man.) The Fifth Beatle is the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles—from their gigs in a tiny cellar in Liverpool to unprecedented international stardom.

Yet more than merely the story of “The Man Who Made The Beatles,” The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the struggle to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Brian Epstein was homosexual when it was a felony to be so in the United Kingdom, Jewish during a period of pervasive anti-Semitism, and from Liverpool when it was considered just a dingy port town. He helped spread the Beatles’ message of love to the entire world, yet died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two, consumed by staggering ambition and the endless struggles that came with it.

Praise for Vivek Tiwary’s The Fifth Beatle:

“Emotionally powerful and visually breathtaking, The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story is one of the best graphic novels you’re going to read this year.” – Newsarama

“Andrew Robinson has a deft touch with facial expression and body language. His engaging character development brings the lads and their magnificent manager to full life. What Vivek does is pretty amazing. It’s not impossible, no doubt, but it’s an ambitious goal to take any compelling figure and tell their story. This tribute to Brian Epstein is spot on and will inspire.” – Comics Grinder

“Writer Vivek J. Tiwary takes us on a very poetic journey, from Epstein’s beginnings as a record shop manager, through his years managing the world’s biggest band, right through to his tragic and untimely death. Andrew C. Robinson’s art is a bit of a star here. His style may not be to everyone’s taste, but there is little doubt his watercolours bring this book to life in a great way. If you are a Beatles fan, or even just take a passing interest, ‘The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story’ won’t disappoint.” – Big Comic Page

Both heartbreaking and uplifting, The Fifth Beatle not only reveals an important, unsung chapter in the history of the Beatles—but it will inspire anyone who’s ever dared to believe in a dream. For more information and to view the trailer for the graphic novel, visit FifthBeatle.com.

The Fifth Beatle is available in bookstores everywhere.

Tiwary is represented by David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis at Circle of Confusion.

The Break-Up Director Peyton Reed To Helm The Fifth Beatle

The New York Times Bestselling Graphic Novel Will be Adapted for the Screen in 2014

New York, NEW YORK (December 4, 2013) – It was announced today that Peyton Reed (BRING IT ON, THE BREAK-UP) has signed on to direct THE FIFTH BEATLE, the film adaptation of the recently released New York Times best-selling graphic novel chronicling the final years of The Beatles’ founder and manager, Brian Epstein. The film is being produced by Academy Award winning producer, Bruce Cohen (AMERICAN BEAUTY, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK) and Tony Award winning producer, Vivek J. Tiwary (“A Raisin in the Sun,” Green Day’s “American Idiot”) who authored the graphic novel. This marks the first ever feature film about The Beatles to secure music rights to their songs granting unprecedented access to the Lennon/McCartney music catalog. The screenplay is written by Tiwary, the project is slated to begin production in 2014 and the casting of the Brian Epstein role will begin now that Reed is on board.

Reed’s big screen debut came in 2000 with the cheerleading sleeper hit, BRING IT ON. The film grossed $90 million worldwide, opening at number one and staying in the top 10 for seven weeks. Following the success of BRING IT ON, Reed was at the helm of 2003’s cult favorite DOWN WITH LOVE, starring Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, and THE BREAK-UP, starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, in 2006, which debuted at #1 and has grossed over $203 million globally. Most recently, in 2008, Reed directed YES MAN, starring Jim Carrey. The film opened number one at the box office, bringing in $18.3 million on opening weekend, and eventually grossing over $225 million worldwide.

“From the moment I read Vivek’s graphic novel, I knew I wanted to be the person to bring Brian’s story to the big screen. I’m a lifelong Beatles fan, obviously, but it’s Brian’s fascinating life that really blew me away and drew me to this project. He’s the ultimate outsider who, against all odds, became the ultimate insider. He was responsible for shepherding the most popular artistic expression of “love” in the history of modern culture, and yet he wasn’t allowed to express his own love during that time,” said Reed of his latest endeavor.

Tiwary and Cohen added, “Peyton’s films are incredibly fun and entertaining, while still underscoring a serious empathy for the struggle for accomplishment, belonging, and the need to love and be loved… In brief, Peyton is simply the perfect director to take the Brian Epstein story to the big screen. We’re honored and excited to be working with him!”

THE FIFTH BEATLE recounts the untold true story of Epstein, the brilliant visionary who discovered The Beatles and helped guide the band to international stardom as their manager, securing their first record deal at a time when no one else was interested, and successfully bringing them to the world stage with a scale and scope no music impresario had ever attempted. Epstein’s boast—“The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!”— seemed absurd in 1961, but proved humbly prophetic by 1967. When he died at the age of 32, he was an extremely successful artist manager and entertainment impresario, but a painfully lonely young man.

ABOUT PEYTON REED
Peyton Reed gained national attention with his feature directorial debut BRING IT ON (Universal). Starring Kirsten Dunst, this vibrant and inspired take on the politics of high school cheerleading won critical raves and opened at #1 with a $17.4 million weekend. It stayed in the top 10 for seven consecutive weeks, becoming the sleeper hit of summer 2000. It went on to sell over 5 million copies on DVD, spawning both a successful franchise for Universal and, most recently, a Broadway musical.

Reed followed it up with 2003’s DOWN WITH LOVE (20th Century Fox), a visually stunning homage to the sunny Rock Hudson/Doris Day comedies of the early sixties. The film, starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor, was critically acclaimed and has become a cult favorite.

In 2006, Reed helmed the smash hit THE BREAK-UP (Universal) starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston. The comedy/drama debuted at #1 with a $39 million opening weekend and went on to gross $118 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide. It was Universal’s highest-grossing film of 2006. 2008 saw Reed direct YES MAN (Warner Brothers) starring Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel and Bradley Cooper. The comedy opened at #1 domestically and became a worldwide hit, grossing over $225 million globally.

Originally from Raleigh, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Reed began his career as a documentary editor at ZM Productions. After writing and directing the award-winning short “Almost Beat” (1989), he directed a series of high profile behind-the-scenes documentaries, including THE SECRETS OF THE BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY, THROUGH THE EYES OF FORREST GUMP and THE HONEYMOONERS ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL.

Reed went on to bring his wry wit and keen sense of visual invention to an incredibly diverse range of projects, from TV movies (THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES, THE LOVE BUG) to music videos (She & Him, Superchunk, The Connells) to critically-hailed comedic television (HBO’s “Mr. Show with Bob and David”, Comedy Central’s “Upright Citizens Brigade”, Fox’s “New Girl”).

In addition, he has directed numerous commercials, including spots for Gap (with Sarah Jessica Parker), Target (with Isaac Mizrahi) and Cisco (with Ellen Page).

A lifelong drummer, Reed is also one half (along with fellow musician Norwood Cheek) of the recording duo Cardinal Family Singers. Their latest album, “This Is What We Did”, is available on iTunes and Amazon.

He currently resides with his wife in Los Angeles, California.

Peyton is represented by WME and Robert Offer.

Off-Broadway, Vivek produced a theatrical collaboration between electropop/performance artists Fischerspooner and avant-garde theatre collective The Wooster Group (founded by Willem Dafoe, Spalding Gray, and others) that launched the 2008 Sao Paulo Art Bienal.

Vivek also serves on the Board of Directors for Valiant Entertainment (www.valiantentertainment.com), a multi-platform company that boasts the third largest and most-loved universe of comic book characters and has been hailed by the New York Times as “Marvel 2.0”.

Vivek has worked with artists covering the entire musical spectrum including Bruce Springsteen, Shania Twain, Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, Kiss, LL Cool J, John Mellencamp, Allen Ginsberg, Oasis, Hanson, 311 and The Mighty Mighty BossTones to name but a few.

USA Today announced that Tiwary will be working with Alanis Morrissette to produce a stage version of Jagged Little Pill!

Broadway To Get A Dose Of Jagged Little Pill

Alanis Morissette will take multi-platinum album to the stage

Vivek J. Tiwary to Produce New Musical

New York, NEW YORK (November 8, 2013) – Seven-time Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette will take her 1995 hit album, Jagged Little Pill, to the Broadway stage debuting a workshop production of the piece in 2014. The musical, also called “Jagged Little Pill,” will include the full song list from the album as well as tracks from the rest of her body of work and some new, original songs that she will compose specially for the stage production. Two-time Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (“Next To Normal”, Green Day’s “American Idiot”) has signed on to provide orchestrations and arrangements. Kitt will be next represented on Broadway with his new, original musical “If/Then” opening in March 2014.

“Jagged Little Pill” will be produced by veteran Broadway producer Vivek J. Tiwary, who saw success with a similar venture, Green Day’s “American Idiot,” and British-Malaysian producer Arvind Ethan David.

“I look forward to taking the heart of Jagged Little Pill and expanding its story, fleshing it out into ever deeper layers of emotionality, specificity, humanity, power, physicality, spirit and fabulism,” shared Morissette.  “I look forward to collaborating with Vivek and Tom and our whole inspiring team to create something greater than the sum of our parts.”

Jagged Little Pill, co-written with Morissette by the album’s producer Glen Ballard, sold over 33 million copies worldwide, producing six hit singles. The album is still the best-selling debut release by a female artist in the U.S. and the highest-selling debut album worldwide in music history. It debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, where it stayed for 12 weeks, and was eventually ranked as the number one best-selling album of the 1990’s, certified 16x Platinum. Morissette won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, making her the youngest artist in history to win the title at age 21. She also won the Grammy for Best Rock Album and the single “You Oughta Know” won Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. Morissette’s musical success spans globally with over 60 million albums sold, seven Grammy Awards, 12 Canadian Juno Awards, two Golden Globe nominations and multiple contributions to major theatrical releases, including THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA and CITY OF ANGELS.

“Jagged Little Pill was a triumph of self-expression– an album that was impossible to ignore with its massive sound and raw honesty. I’m proud to be working with Alanis to bring that same emotional power and bravery onto a Broadway stage,” said producer Tiwary. “We need more Broadway musicals with a serious, relatable emotional core and strong female voices. So we’re looking forward to honoring the Jagged Little Pill legacy– while still surprising fans with some unexpected twists.”

“Alanis’ songs have always uniquely combined narrative clarity with dramatic power– bringing them to the Broadway stage feels like bringing them home,” added David.

The Fifth Beatle To Partner With Rolling Stone For International Debut

Tenth anniversary issue of Rolling Stone Italy will include Italian version of Brian Epstein graphic novel three weeks prior to official release date

New York, NY (October 24, 2013) – Thanks to a collaboration between Dark Horse Comics and Panini Comics, the world premiere of the long-awaited graphic novel written by Vivek J. Tiwary, drawn by Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker and dedicated to the manager of the Beatles, Brian Epstein, is arriving in Italy. The Fifth Beatle is the latest addition to the prestigious 9L Panini catalogue and will be released in Italy in partnership with Rolling Stone Italy to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the magazine.

With this joint venture between Panini Comics and Rolling Stone, The Fifth Beatle will be first made available at newsstands in Italy at the beginning of November, three weeks before it is released in other territories. A special Italian version of The Fifth Beatle will be sold bundled with the tenth anniversary special edition of Rolling Stone Italy – the Italian version of the most popular music magazine in the world.

The graphic novel chronicles the early years of The Beatles seen through the eyes of the brilliant Brian Epstein, an entrepreneur, but above all a friend of the Fab Four. His tragic and inspiring human story is meticulously reconstructed by Tony Award-winning Broadway  producer, Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s “American Idiot”, “The Addams Family”, “A Raisin In The Sun”) and is made concrete by the beautiful drawings of Andrew C. Robinson and Kyle Baker. The graphic novel is being adapted into a feature film which will be produced by Tiwary and Oscar-winning producer Bruce Cohen (AMERICAN BEAUTY, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK.) Tiwary will be a Panini Comics special guest at Lucca Comics and Games, an Italian event held in the heart of the Tuscan city from October 31st until November 3rd.to present “The Fifth Beatle” to Italian readers and press and give fans an opportunity to meet the author.

“I’ve been researching The Fifth Beatle for more than two decades,” says Tiwary, “it’s a true labor of love! And since Italy is a country passionate about the Beatles, music and graphic novels, I’m simply honored that we are debuting The Fifth Beatle in partnership with Rolling Stone Italy. I could not be happier that our Italian fans will be the first in the world to read The Fifth Beatle and to learn the untold true story of the Beatles manager Brian Epstein. It’s a story that I know will inspire them as much as it has inspired me.”

“The Fifth Beatle” follows the Liverpool quartet from obscurity to the release of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the album that marked a watershed in the history of rock music and established The Beatles as true cultural icons. But The Fifth Beatle is above all the story of a visionary– Brian Epstein, the man who, with his intuitions, led the Fab Four to unprecedented international stardom. A life of triumphs and tragedies, ambitions and fears – Epstein suffered to hide his homosexuality from the world – friendship and loneliness, until his premature death at the age of 32. It is a story full of dreams and music, the greatest music of all time.

The Fifth Beatle will be available outside of Italy on November 19th in a hardcover, oversized library format for $19.99. In addition, both a collector’s edition and limited edition hardcover of this groundbreaking graphic novel will also be available, featuring a wraparound, textured cover and a section of bonus materials including Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, artist sketches, and alternate covers, for $49.99 and $99.99.

“If anyone was the fifth Beatle, it was Brian,” said Paul McCartney in 1999.

Freedom to Marry Announces Partnership with Novel/Film “Fifth Beatle”

New York – Today Freedom to Marry announced a partnership with The Fifth Beatle, a graphic novel examining the life of legendary Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Epstein was a brilliant visionary who discovered the Beatles and led them on the path to international stardom even as he struggled with his own sense of belonging: he was gay when it was a felony; he was Jewish during a time of anti-Semitism; and he was from Liverpool, then considered a dingy port town.

“Freedom to Marry has long urged that the most effective way to continue winning over hearts and minds is talking about who gay people are, why marriage matters, and the harms inflicted by the denial of the freedom to marry,” said Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry. “Vivek J. Tiwary’s The Fifth Beatle tells the compelling story of a tremendously successful entertainment executive who lived at a time that gay people were excluded from the public dialogue — not that long ago — and the costs of that exclusion. Brian Epstein’s story portrays the unnecessary, unfair, and unacceptable pain and price of telling some of our friends that they cannot dream of a life of love and commitment equally respected under the law. In a year when we celebrate our winning the freedom to marry in Epstein’s home country of Britain, and a year of real momentum here in the U.S., we continue to imagine, as John Lennon urged, a better world — and are working to bring it home.”

The Fifth Beatle takes the form of a graphic novel which chronicles Epstein’s discovery of the Beatles, his work to sharpen them into stars and secure a record deal when no one else would sign them, and his overwhelming success in the midst of his personal obstacles—particularly his struggle with being gay. Epstein suffered an untimely death at age 32 and has become a largely forgotten figure in Beatles history.

It is a project of Broadway veteran Vivek J. Tiwary, who previously worked as lead producer for the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun and as co-producer for the Broadway productions of The Addams Family and Green Day’s rock opera American Idiot. In total, Tiwary’s Broadway productions have garnered a total of 25 Tony Awards stemming from 44 Tony nominations. The Fifth Beatle is his first book and will be his first film.

“Growing up as the son of first-generation immigrants and becoming one of few producers of color in the entertainment business, I can relate to the outsider status that Epstein felt so many decades ago in Liverpool,” said Vivek J. Tiwary, Broadway theatre producer and CEO of Tiwary Entertainment Group. “Epstein’s story and struggle served as an inspiration to me for years, and I’m hoping that The Fifth Beatle will inspire in turn—and that our partnership with Freedom to Marry will point our readers and viewers in a direction where they can make an immediate and important difference, by supporting a fight worth winning. A fight we are going to win.”

The book is scheduled for release on November 19 by Dark House Comics. It includes an afterword by pioneering cartoonist Howard Cruse (Stuck Rubber Baby, Wendel) about his own experiences with the struggle for marriage and the connection between the Brian Epstein story and Freedom to Marry. In addition, The Fifth Beatle is being adapted into a feature film and has secured unprecedented rights to Beatles’ songs. Academy Award-winning producer Bruce Cohen will produce the film along with Tiwary. Cohen won the 2000 Academy Award for Best Picture for American Beauty and has been nominated twice more for Milk (2008) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012). The Fifth Beatle will begin production in 2014.

“I’m thrilled that Freedom to Marry will be partnering with The Fifth Beatle graphic novel,” said Cohen. “I hope that by embracing the music of the Beatles, the message of love that they are famous for, and the talent of the gay man who made it all possible, viewers around the world will be inspired to get involved with Freedom to Marry so that the much-needed work of full marriage equality can continue.” Cohen is a longtime LGBT activist and supporter of Freedom to Marry, as well as the current President of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the group behind the recently victorious Supreme Court case which declared Prop 8 unconstitutional and allowed marriages for same-sex couples in California to resume.

Tiwary is a longtime straight ally whose support of Freedom to Marry goes back nearly a decade, when he and his then-fiancée requested that their wedding guests make donations to Freedom to Marry in lieu of wedding gifts. Freedom to Marry will serve as a sponsor of the book’s launch party in New York City on November 19.

Tiwary and Cohen will participate in a panel discussion highlighting the book and the partnership along with The Fifth Beatle illustrator Andrew C. Robinson; bestselling author Dave Marsh; and top record producer David Kahne at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 11.

“If anyone was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian.” — Paul McCartney

Toronto, Ontario (August 20, 2013) – The anticipation around The Fifth Beatle continues to grow as Dark Horse announces the involvement of music legends Billy J. Kramer and Andrew Loog Oldham lending their words and support to this remarkable piece of graphic literature chronicling the life of Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein. Billy J. Kramer was managed by Epstein in the 1960’s and had a string of hits including “Do You Want to Know a Secret?”, “Bad to Me”, and “Little Children”; and Andrew Loog Oldham was The Beatles’ publicist in 1963 before he went on to discover, produce and manage The Rolling Stones. Today, Kramer continues to record and release albums, and Oldham is a bestselling author and broadcast personality.

More than merely the story of “The Man Who Made the Beatles,” The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the desire to leave behind a legacy, amidst the struggle to overcome crushing personal obstacles and insurmountable odds. Written by multiple Tony Award–winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American Idiot, The Addams Family, Mel Brooks’ The Producers) and painted by fanboy favorite Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty Star, King Conan, Starman, Superman) The Fifth Beatle will be released on November 19.

“Telling the Brian Epstein story in The Fifth Beatle has been a true labor-of-love, as I’ve long considered Epstein my “Historical Mentor” and someone I never had the good fortune to meet, but whose life story I have been greatly inspired by and have tried to learn from. So it is incredibly humbling and affirming to have the input and support of Andrew Loog Oldham and Billy J. Kramer, two music industry superstars who truly knew Brian Epstein. I’m extremely grateful to them both, and I can’t wait to share their illuminating contributions with our readers,” said Tiwary.

The standard hardcover edition will be available for $19.99 in an oversized library format. Both a collector’s edition and limited edition hardcover of this groundbreaking graphic novel will also be available, featuring a wraparound, textured cover and a section of bonus materials including Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, artist sketches, and alternate covers, for $49.99 and $99.99.

Tiwary will be signing limited prints of The Fifth Beatle at Fan Expo in Toronto, Ontario this Friday & Saturday, August 23rd & 24th at the Dark Horse booth #856.

THE FIFTH BEATLE Graphic Novel Trailer

‘The Fifth Beatle’ Exclusive Trailer Debut

By Laura Hertzfeld | ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.COM | July 16, 2013

The Fab Four wouldn’t have been the Fab Four without the genius of the man Paul McCartney called the “fifth Beatle” — Brian Epstein. Epstein discovered the Beatles and guided them through their path to fame with a mix of marketing madness, business savvy, and inspiration. He died at age 32, just as the band was seeing the height of their success, but he’s getting his due (finally!) in a graphic novel that will debut at Comic-Con. Titled (fittingly), The Fifth Beatle, the story follows Epstein and the band through their early days in Liverpool, their first record deal, and Epstein’s epic 1961 proclamation that “The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!” The novel also focuses on Epstein’s life apart from the band and his personal struggle with being gay in a time when homosexuality was still a crime in England.

THE FIFTH BEATLE TO BE PUBLISHED IN THREE STUNNING EDITIONS!

“If anyone was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian.”—Paul McCartney
MAY 31, MILWAUKIE, OR—Ever since its announcement last fall, there has been buzz about THE FIFTH BEATLE. Written by multiple Tony Award–winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American Idiot, The Addams Family, Mel Brooks’s The Producers), The Fifth Beatle, chronicling the life of the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, will officially be released on November 19.

The Fifth Beatle, from M Press Books, a division of Dark Horse Comics, recounts the untold true story of Brian Epstein, the visionary manager who discovered and guided the Beatles to unprecedented international stardom—yet died painfully lonely at the young age of thirty-two. More than merely the story of “The Man Who Made the Beatles,” The Fifth Beatle is an uplifting, tragic, and ultimately inspirational human story about the desire to leave behind a legacy, amidst the struggle to overcome crushing personal obstacles and insurmountable odds.

This marks the first full-length graphic novel painted by fanboy favorite Andrew C. Robinson (Dusty Star, King Conan, Starman, Superman). The book also features a special section paying homage to the 1960s Beatles cartoons, lovingly drawn by multiple Eisner and Harvey Award–winning cartoonist Kyle Baker (Why I Hate Saturn, Plastic Man, Nat Turner).

“Telling the Brian Epstein story is a true labor of love. The Fifth Beatle really is my life’s work—as I’ve been researching Brian’s life for more than half my own,” says Tiwary. “So it’s with great excitement and anticipation that I can finally share this little-known story about one of the great architects of modern pop culture with the rest of the world.”

Vivek J. Tiwary is also set to write and produce a feature-film adaptation of his graphic novel. Tiwary has signed a deal with Sony/ATV (who control the Lennon/McCartney music catalog) which gives him unprecedented access to Beatles songs for the film.

The standard hardcover edition will be available for $19.99 in an oversized library format. A collector’s-edition hardcover of this groundbreaking graphic novel will also be available, featuring a wraparound, textured cover and a section of bonus materials including Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia, artist sketches, and alternate covers, for $49.99.

The limited edition (1,500 copies) features a tip-in sheet signed by creators Vivek J. Tiwary, Andrew C. Robinson, and Kyle Baker, along with a twenty-four-page bonus section including rare Beatles and Brian Epstein memorabilia and behind-the-scenes sketches, a unique, textured cover, and a special slipcase, for $99.99.

Tiwary will be signing limited prints of The Fifth Beatle at BookExpo America in New York City this Saturday, June 8th at the Dark Horse booth #1003 at 11 a.m.

Additionally both Tiwary and artist Andrew Robinson will be delivering a panel presentation at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC on June 9th titled: Comics of the Fab Four: The Fifth Beatle and Beyond. The panel begins promptly at 11:30 a.m.

SPIN – ‘Fifth Beatle’ Brian Epstein to Become Comic Book Hero

Your geeky friends and obsessed uncles will debate until they’re blue in the face over who deserves the hallowed “Fifth Beatle” mantle, but Paul McCartney once famously assigned the title to the man who discovered his band, and worked behind the scenes to secure their mega stardom: Brian Epstein. Though the Beatles’ manager may seem an unlikely subject for a graphic novel, one of the creators of Green Day’s American Idiot musical will tell the troubled English entrepreneur’s story in The Fifth Beatle, to be released by Dark Horse Comics next year.

Vivek J. Tiwary Set To Write and Produce Feature Film Adaptation Of The Graphic Novel THE FIFTH BEATLE

New York, NEW YORK (October 10, 2012)

Award-winning producer and writer, Vivek J. Tiwary, is set to write and produce a feature film adaptation of his upcoming graphic novel, THE FIFTH BEATLE, which chronicles the life of The Beatles little-known manager, Brian Epstein. As Paul McCartney said, “If anyone was the Fifth Beatle, it was Brian.” This groundbreaking project also marks the first time a feature film about the band has ever secured rights to include Beatles songs.

Tiwary has signed a deal with Sony/ATV (who control the Lennon/McCartney music catalog) which gives him unprecedented access to Beatles songs for the film.

The graphic novel, THE FIFTH BEATLE, is being written by Tiwary and drawn by fan-favorite artist Andrew Robinson (STAR WARS, BATMAN, SUPERMAN) with additional contributions by multiple Eisner and Harvey award-winning artist Kyle Baker (PLASTIC MAN, WHY I HATE SATURN, NAT TURNER). It is slated to be published in 2013. Both Robinson and Tiwary will attend the upcoming New York Comic Con from October 10th-14th to present the graphic novel and meet fans. Artwork from the novel will be exclusively displayed online at www.thefifthbeatle.com.

On Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm, Tiwary and Robinson will appear on the panel “A Celebration of Pop Music Comics” at Jim Hanley’s Universe store. They will then sign exclusive artwork from THE FIFTH BEATLE at New York Comic Con’s Dark Horse booth at the Javitz Center on Friday, October 12th at 5pm.

THE FIFTH BEATLE from M Press Books, a division of Dark Horse Comics, recounts the untold true story of Epstein, the brilliant visionary who discovered The Beatles and helped guide the band to international stardom as their manager, securing their first record deal at a time when no one else was interested, and successfully bringing them to the world stage with a scale and scope no music impresario had ever attempted.

Epstein’s boast—“The Beatles will be bigger than Elvis!”— seemed absurd in 1961, but proved humbly prophetic by 1967. When he died at the age of 32, he was an extremely successful artist manager and entertainment impresario, but a painfully lonely young man.  The film will deal with Epstein’s struggles with his sexuality and religion, while desperately trying to fit into the “Fab Four’s” world.

“My interest in the Brian Epstein story began almost 20 years ago, when I decided that music management was the area of the entertainment industry that I first wanted to pursue,” says Vivek.  “ I had been a lifelong Beatles fan, so I thought that it made sense to study the management of the band that had written the rules of the modern music industry.  What I unearthed after much research (there is a paltry amount of information readily available on Brian, which is part of why I want to bring his story to the world) was not just an inspirational business story and a blueprint for what I wanted to accomplish with my career, but also a very human story. This is a true labor of love, passion project for me.”

Tiwary is represented by David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis at Circle of Confusion.

The Beatles, Green Day, and Breaking into Television / TEG Update 2012

In 2011 we secured unprecedented access to Beatles’ songs for our film “The Fifth Beatle,” we changed the face of Broadway with Green Day, and we made our first successful foray into TV with a sitcom sale to CBS. See other highlights below and an overview of more exciting TEG productions to come in 2012!

THE FIFTH BEATLE
www.twitter.com/FifthBeatleFilm
Our labor-of-love film about Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2011, as we secured unprecedented rights to use Lennon/McCartney Beatles songs in the film! We are the first film that taps into The Beatles’ biography to have ever secured such rights! It’s a huge hurdle overcome that has truly paved the way to finally bringing this story to the screen…

FRACTURED and ASCENSION
TEG is developing a number of exciting television projects for 2012 including ASCENSION, a historical fiction / science fiction series juxtaposing the history of astronomy with mankind’s future in the stars; and FRACTURED, an epic one-hour drama best described as “Lost” meets “The Da Vinci Code.”

DECOY DREAM
2011 saw the completion of Vivek J. Tiwary’s screenplay for the musical film “Decoy Dream”—best described as “Pretty In Pink” meets “Roxanne” by way of “High School Musical” and paying homage to the great John Hughes comedies that Vivek grew up with. There are exciting discussions going on behind the scenes, so expect to hear more about “Decoy Dream” soon…

GREEN DAY’S AMERICAN IDIOT
www.americanidiotthemusical.com
We are proud that a film adaptation of our Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is being developed with Tom Hanks’ Playtone Productions and Universal Pictures. Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”) is penning the screenplay to be directed by our Broadway helmer, Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening,” TV’s “Smash”). 2011 Broadway highlights included Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Grammy and Academy Award-winner Melissa Etheridge, Justin Guarini of “American Idol,” and rock band AFI’s Davey Havok all joining our amazing cast. Brian Epstein Bio Shows Beatle Manager’s Human Side (Pt. 2 just posted)

So why do a movie on Brian Epstein?

“He has been a great source of inspiration to me in my career,” Tiwary says. “I describe him as being a historical mentor, which basically means somebody I never had a chance to meet, obviously, but someone whose life I look to to learn from, both what to do and what not to do. I view him as a hero, but a flawed hero. So I’m not just blindly in love with Brian. I think he did a lot of things wrong.

“But I say that because to think of Brian Epstein as being a historical mentor and having been a Beatle fan since I was a child and to have shared the Beatles with my parents who were huge Beatles fans … when you factor those things in, what I’m pursuing is a passion project.”

He says the interest was rooted in his upbringing and early life.

“I grew up here in New York City and  my parents were very passioniate about the performing arts. So I grew up exposed to opera, ballet, theater, music, film, visual arts. My parents were huge Beatle fans. I remember my parents listening to three things: They listened to the Who, the Beatles and classical. Those are the things we listened to in the house. And so I grew up since a little kid with a big love of the Beatles.

“So I went to business school. I was at the Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. While I was there I was also working part time for Sony Music. And I was dreaming about wanting to start my own company and knowing that I wanted to work not just in music, but in theater, film, television etc. But I thought if I’m going to be an entertainment industry entrepreneur, I’m going to start with managing bands. And I thought that Brian and the Beatles were the team that wrote and rewote the rules of the pop music business.”

But there was another reason.

“It was really the human side of his story that struck a chord for me.” As Epstein was both Jewish and gay, Tiwary says, he faced a lot of obstacles in his life.

“And that’s when I began to develop my deep love of Brian Epstein. This was long before I was producing theater, thinking of screenplays. I was just a student at business school. If you were to ask me when did my research begin for this project, it’d be almost 20 years ago, 15-20 years ago.”

He says his script will have a different focus than “The Hours and Times,” the 1991 film directed by Christopher Munch that was the fictionalized highly sexual story of what might have happened when John Lennon and Brian Epstein traveled to Spain together in 1963.

“I want to say that I don’t subcribe to their version of what happened, but I do give them kudos for having a vision. But that’s not my take on it at all,” he says. “My film is not about just that one weekend. My film is about Brian.

“It’s not a cradle-to-grave story. It focuses on the time he spent with the Beatles, although it gives you through dream sequences and exposition and flashbacks, we do get insight into his childhood to learn a little bit about what makes him tick. But it primarily focuses on the years from 1960 to 1967 when he died,” he says.

Brian Epstein Bio Shows Beatle Manager’s Human Side (Pt. 1)

After not hearing about it for so long, the recent news that the film “The Fifth Beatle,” about the life of Beatles manager Brian Epstein, had locked up financing and movie rights was a wake-up call that the film is alive and well.

“I started working on ‘The Fifth Beatle’ about five years ago, but it’s not as though that’s the only thing we’ve been doing,” writer-producer Vivek Tiwary told us on the phone. “I’m currently a producer on ‘American Idiot,’ the Green Day musical and producer of ‘The Addams Family,’ both of which are Broadway productions and both of which are prepping road tours to start later this year. And I’ve also been developing a television sitcom, which I just sold to CBS, called ‘Punk Rock Dad.'”

Tiwary says getting the music rights for the Brian Epstein film was a big hurdle.

“It’s taken literally years to secure the music rights and putting some financing together, no easy feat,” he says. “The music rights alone, that’s a process that’s been over two years just working on securing the music rights. So it was not an easy process and something that I’m very proud to have accomplished.” He also said a $25 million budget has been secured from DIMI Entertainment in Nashville.

There were previous reports about a Brian Epstein movie starring Jude Law, but Tiwary makes it clear his project is separate. “We are talking about another project completely. Jude Law announced he was going to make his own Brian Epstein film about a decade ago.” He says he reached out to Law to combine forces, but was told by his agents that Jude was no longer pursuing his Brian Epstein projects.

Tiwary wrote the script for the new film. “I wrote the screenplay myself. The script is finished. Speaking as a writer, your script is never really done until you’re in the editing room, really. But I have a script that is at a place where I’m very proud of it.”

Though the film isn’t based on any particular book, there is one Brian Epstein biography that he was very much aware of.

“There’s one book which I believe is out of print called ‘In His Life,’ which is a collection of interviews written by the late Debbie Geller, who incidentally was a good friend of mine and a big supporter of this project. She died way too young and I hope she is resting in peace. And I hope she is proud of what I’ve accomplished so far.”

He says when he started the project, he touched base, sort of, with Brian Epstein.

“When I first started developing this project about five years, the very first thing I did was I flew to Liverpool and I went to Brian Epstein’s gravesite. And I sat at the grave and I told Brian what I wanted to do and asked his permission, so to speak. In a poetic, karmic way I thought that was the right thing to do. After that, I reached out to his estate to also make sure his estate was comfortable with me and my approach. And I would say I have become very friendly with his estate in the ongoing years. They’ve been wonderful to me.”

American Idiot Contest Winner, Evan Clementi on his backstage experience!

“I want to thank Tiwary Entertainment for the amazing experience they gave me on Friday 4/22/11. As an avid fan of American Idiot and an even bigger Green Day fan, when I heard about this contest I had to enter. I was ecstatic when I found out I won and to make it even more exciting finding out I would have the opportunity to go backstage after the show was mind blowing.

When my sister Cari and I arrived at the theatre we picked up our tickets and headed to our seats. The seats were great. They were 6 rows back in the orchestra. We even saw Billie Joe’s wife sitting a few rows down from us. The show itself was phenomenal. My sister and I were smiling the entire time. We were both sad when the show ended, but excited as we knew what was coming; a backstage tour.

As we walked through the ally and to the “man with the list” of those allowed backstage our excitement only grew. We met up with Tiwary’s intern Elisa, and the shows bassist Dan Grennes came out to get the three of us. While backstage we had the opportunity to walk onto the stage and see all the props. The whole experience was surreal. After taking a few pictures of the stage and with a few cast members Cari noticed Michael Mayer, the shows director and co-writer standing in the wings. The three of us went over to him to ask for a picture, but he was speaking with someone and we did not want to interrupt; so we waited. The person he was talking with had his back to us and even though we were standing right behind him none of us noticed who it was. After a few seconds we realized it was the one and only… BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG. We couldn’t believe our eyes. When the two of them finished speaking we had to opportunity to talk with them both a little and thank them for creating such a great show and to thank Billie whose music means so much to us. After speaking with them Billie signed some things I had brought with me and his son Jacob took a picture with the two of us with Billie and his wife Adrienne.

It was an incredible experience and I am so thankful to Tiwary and Dan Grennes for giving my sister and I this opportunity, it was something we will never forget.”

WAGNER TO WATCHMEN: RUMINATIONS ON ADAPTATION

This weekend I finally saw “The Watchmen” film—since my wife and I have a 9-month-old son, it’s increasingly difficult to make it to the movies, especially one that’s almost 3 hours long. Based on Alan Moore’s highly acclaimed graphic novel (though not, in my humble opinion, Moore’s best work), the movie was much criticized by both fans and non-believers—opinions ranged from it being too faithful to the source material and therefore not unique and interesting, to it not being faithful enough and therefore sacrilegious. To this I ask the simple question—who cares? I thought “The Watchmen” was a beautiful and brilliant adaptation. A comparison with the graphic novel misses the point.

I’ve also just finished reading P. Craig Russell’s “The Ring of The Nibelung” graphic novels—literally, a comic book adaptation of Richard Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” operas. Were the graphic novels as good as the operas? Isn’t that an absurd question? You can’t really compare a graphic novel to an opera, as the media are so very different. And despite the fact that films and graphic novels are enjoying so much overlap these days, I think the principle is the same—the media are actually very different. What works on the page doesn’t always work on the screen and vice-versa.

The biological definition of adaptation is the process in which an organism adjusts or changes its behavior, physiology, and structure to become better suited to its environment.

In art, it’s the same. In working an adaptation, the artist’s job is to adjust or change the art such that it becomes better suited to it’s new medium— not necessarily “better” overall, just better suited to it’s new form—whether that be a film, an opera, or a graphic novel.

Russell’s “Ring” adaptations are brilliant in that he captures the spirit of the source material and both adjusts and changes it to suit the graphic novel medium. The results fascinate and soar. Where Wagner employs leitmotifs (“a sort of musical signature—think of Darth Vader and his distinctive entrance music”), Russell creates visual leitmotifs, recurring images to introduce, re-introduce, or subtly include the effect of a character or theme. He adapts the concept of leitmotif from music to visual art seamlessly, and it works brilliantly.

So rather than ask, “is the new art better?” we should be asking first, “does it work in it’s new medium?” And if it does, then the adaptation has been a success.

The next question, of course, is “does it entertain or inspire?”

All pretentious ruminations aside, I thought both “The Watchmen” and “The Ring of The Nibelung” were great. And I’m glad I never stopped to ask whether they were as good, or better, than their sources.

VJT

[As an aside: It’s widely known that Alan Moore did not endorse or see “The Watchmen” film, and if my understanding is correct he didn’t want his graphic novel to be adapted at all. Whether or not “The Watchmen” film should exist is a separate issue, revolving around artists’ prerogative and legal rights. That’s for a different rumination.]

MICHAEL JACKSON, THE BEATLES, AND INFINITE YOUTH

I was shocked when I heard the news about Michael Jackson’s passing last week– partially because he was so young and, to me, his death so unexpected… and partially because I felt much sadder than I thought I would. I didn’t think I cared so much about Michael Jackson anymore.

But now I realize that to pretend I don’t care about Michael Jackson is like trying to pretend I don’t care about youth. And I don’t mean my youth– I mean the concept of youth itself.

There was a period in my life– that precious place between childhood and young adulthood– when Michael Jackson meant the world to me. (And this was long before “tween” was a marketing catchword, though I’m fairly confident I’m not talking about being a tween, at least as the marketers define them).

In his famous trial, Oscar Wilde spoke of a pure form of love between an elder and and a younger man, where “the elder man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him.”

Well, when I was a heterosexual 10-year old boy, Michael Jackson, his music, and his music videos represented all the joy, hope, and glamour that life had to offer. Yes, I loved him. And now that I am an older man with some supposed sense of intellect, I rejected that memory and buried that love. Why?

It would be easy to say it was because I discovered the Sex Pistols.

But that’s a cop-out.

Yeah, I stopped listening to Michael Jackson years ago and Johnny Rotten replaced him in both my headphones and my attire. But what I realized last week is that I never stopped believing in what Michael Jackson represented to me– and that’s why his passing made me so sad. When I think about it like this, my reaction is no surprise at all.

The Beatles were the first band I ever loved, and I discovered them by listening to my parents’ vinyl. But by the time I got The Beatles’ indelibly under my skin, they were already legends, and they had already broken up. With the rest of my city, I was devastated by the death of John Lennon and I will never forget that day… But Michael Jackson was really and truly the first musician I was old enough to actually follow, to feel the excitement of new news and new developments. I remember waiting up all night for MTV to play the “Thriller” video. This was LONG before the days of on-demand and YouTube; I even remember holding a Walkman tape recorder up to the television set so I could capture an audio recording of “Thriller” with the dialog bits. And I remember the giddy anticipation as subsequent videos, songs, and performances were unleashed, not knowing what to expect– but expecting that it would be, and feel, awesome.

Sure, while I was slam dancing to Murphy’s Law and Underdog at the old Ritz I read about how Michael’s life got increasingly strange, sad, and even morally suspect. But in the end, since I never actually knew the man, what really matters– to me, that is– is what he represented for me, what he left behind for me. And that sadder, stranger person is not the Michael I knew, nor the Michael I remember. Mine makes me feel young again– full of joy, hope, and glamour; ready to stay up all night again and take on the world.

Thanks, Michael– and rest in peace.

SENSORIA WAS A BLAST!

I had such fun at the Sensoria Film & Music Festival in Sheffield last week, and I must thank everyone who packed the auditorium during the special presentation I gave with our composer Nitin Sawhney. It was a great thrill to speak about the film and answer questions in a public forum– and especially to have been given the chance to play some music from the upcoming score and soundtrack! The enthusiasm and support we received was overwhelming, so I’m looking forward to sharing more announcements over the coming months, because we’ve been hard at work behind the scenes… So stay tuned and thanks again!

SPEAKING AT SENSORIA FILM + MUSIC FESTIVAL
